Conference backs government’s drive to accelerate open source

Published: March 03, 2009

Open source consultancy Fusis Group is hosting a one day conference on Friday 6th of March to inform ICT decision makers in educational and government organisations about the benefits of open source technology. The conference follows the government’s recent commitment to accelerate the adoption of open source software in public services.

The Open Source in Schools event will feature presentations from leading experts such as Dr David Haskins from Kingston University who will be speaking about ‘Effective Teaching Using Open Source’ and Acronis who will be providing best practice advice on backup and recovery strategies in open source environments.

“There is clear demand and interest in open source technology, but while IT managers in schools, colleges and universities may have the drive to implement open source technology, they can sometimes struggle to convince those higher up the food chain that there is a clear need for adoption,” explains Amit Khanna, managing director, Fusis Group. “The government’s recent commitment to support the use of open source in public services should help IT departments educate the educators. This conference will serve to boost their case, delving into both the technology and the business benefits behind it.”

Kevin Moreau, general manager UK and Ireland at Acronis, comments: “The education sector is under pressure to cut its procurement costs and adopting open source is one method of doing this. Fusis has a solid reputation for providing excellent solutions to the education market. They understand the sector’s pain points and we’re pleased that they now offer our backup and recovery solutions for both Windows and Linux environments.”

Fusis Group will offer Acronis’ True Image Echo Server for Linux as part of its backup and recovery portfolio. Acronis is one of only a few vendors with the capability to provide system protection and recovery of Linux servers by enabling users to create an exact server disk image including the operating system, databases and applications for a complete server backup and disaster recovery. In the case of a system crash, the solution allows the user to restore the entire server rapidly. The central console allows users to manage both Linux and Windows environments, offering support for multiple platforms.
